Let Us Work Together

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

This inspirational comment recently showed up on-line, attributed to an Indigenous Australian artist, activist and teacher named Lila Watson (although she insisted that the quote be attributed to "Aboriginal activists group, Queensland, 1970's,” because it was, apparently, “born of a collective process,” as she humbly put it).

Gratitude, The Real Spice of Life

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

It’s easy to forget to be grateful for our many blessings. That’s what a busy schedule and 24/7 doomsday news programs can do! But, as Kimberley Cohen, the founder of The Insight Technique, reminds us in a recent blog, “Being thankful should be treated as an important part of the day because appreciation contributes to our genuine happiness.”

Water Water Everywhere ...

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

In Ethiopia, like many desert countries, villagers walk miles every day to get their water. But an Italian designer, cofounder of Architecture and Vision, is changing that. His solution is simple, it creates local jobs, and provides clean water via an invention he names WarkaWater, after the local warka trees.

No Sex

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

It’s the big night and big sex is guaranteed, right? Wedding night, that is.
Well, turns out, not so much. A recent poll revealed that at least 25% of newly weds don’t actually have sex on their wedding night and “experts” estimate the real number could be much higher. Why no sex? Too drunk and too tired head the list of excuses.

Good Deeds Pay Off

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

You may have read the recent story about a Massachusetts teenager who was fired from 7-Eleven because she gave a cup of coffee to a homeless man. Apparently she was hired within days by a homeless-services organization.
Good for her. Good for the news services that published her story. And good for the organization that hired her. What a demonstration of cause and effect, ironic, justice.

Retreat Into Authentic Happiness

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Whoever coined that term, “Go slow to go fast” may have been talking about how to achieve business success but they could as easily have been consulting on our quest for personal fulfillment. Similarly, Abraham Lincoln famously said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

Preparation. Seems simple enough. But how often we rush into action, rather than taking time to prepare. Imagine a pilot taking off without checking his landing gear; the flight might go well for hours… until it was time to land!

What You Think You Become

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Among the many simple and wise statements from the Buddha, this one provides particularly clear direction: “The mind is everything. What you think you become.”

So, what do you think about this? What’s your knee jerk thought reaction? For some it will be rejection. “Too simplistic.” For others it will be doubt. “Could be, not sure.” For others, it’s “Right on.”

Stand Your Ground

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Florida is back in the news. When a Tampa Bay Times’ recent review of 200 Stand Your Ground cases revealed “an uneven application” and “shocking outcomes,” a state lawmaker filed an amendment to limit the media’s access to case information, presumably because too much disclosure would not bode well for defendants.

Trees Or Money?

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Big changes are coming at Asia Pulp and Paper, a company some complain has done legendary damage to the world’s tropical forests. Because of stubborn customers and conservation groups, APP is promising official changes to policy that will result in a significant reduction in deforestation throughout Indonesia. The company has also vowed to cooperate with local communities on new tree plantation development.

Fitness in 30 Seconds… or Less!

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

A recent on-line article suggested you can get fit and stay fit in just 30 seconds, by utilizing wait time throughout the day, using those wasted moments to work out with small weights.

Examples they gave included being on hold during a phone call, waiting for software to load or rebooting your computer, those moments while food is heating, during TV commercials that you mute, sitting at a red light, etc.

What Happened?

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Remember the tale of the unfortunate frog? Stick him in a pan of warm water and turn up the heat slowly… he’ll just sit there until he boils to death. Conversely, toss him in hot water and he’ll jump out immediately. What does that say about how life has changed in America over the past few decades?

How a society cares for its children speaks volumes. What happened in America over the past few decades? We’re failing in that department, at least so says a 2013 report released by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics.
