You Can’t Be a Democrat and Go to Heaven

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

School Teacher GraphicA Kentucky high school teacher is under fire for writing "You can't be a democrat and go to heaven" on a class whiteboard. The statement was attributed to a student. Another student reported feeling ridiculed and bullied in a following discussion, so much so that she's refused to return to class and is now being home schooled.

She'll likely have a better chance of getting an actual education at home than in this classroom so that's the good news. The bad news is what passes for education these days. While news stories about this issue have focused on whether or not the teacher should have written a statement like this on the board, the more important point is the role of education relative to prejudice.

Lying For the Lord

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Fingers-Crossed-6300811With the national election now behind us, it might be interesting to step back and consider what personal lessons might be learned, from a modern spiritual perspective. Much was made during the campaign of candidate Mitt Romney's penchant for obscuring the truth. He's a Mormon. A tenant of their faith is called "Lying for the Lord." Simply put, it condones lying to protect their Church.

While we might be offended by the concept, what might this reveal about ourselves? Who is your Lord? What do you lie about, to protect what you believe is sacred to you? For instance, do you ever exaggerate? It's a common habit. You could exaggerate your abilities to inflate your significance with others. You might rewrite your history. After all, who really wants to remember himself as the bad guy? Memories become fish stories. The fish gets bigger, the good deed gets mightier, and the shadows of social misdemeanors flee in the light of revisionism.

Do You Really Have a Choice?

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

American-Election-2526521Election 2012. Hundreds of millions of advertising dollars are aimed squarely at you with one objective: to influence your choice.

Do you really have a choice?

On election day (or before if you're worried about your toilet overflowing) you'll vote for our current president or the shiny new wannabe. One of them will take the throne for at least four years and the same media voices that are bringing you exhausting details of the soap opera intrigue leading up to the election will bring you exhausting details of the soap opera intrigue of the results, complete with hand wringing, victory laps, tears and projectile assurances that tomorrow will now be better (or worse) than yesterday.

Make Sure Your I.G.S. Is Steering Your GPS

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

gold-compass-150Being able to get to your geographical destination easily and quickly depends on navigation skills and traffic. Attaining life goals is more complicated. Outcomes are often vague, like being rich and happily married, which is hardly as precise as getting to Marv's Deli in Brooklyn by 7 p.m. on Thursday night.

Some life destinations turn out to be more satisfying than others. Remember times when you got what you wanted, only to be disappointed and unfulfilled? Likewise, you've enjoyed the opposite -- soul level contentment that resulted from actualizing your core intentions. What makes the difference?

Life holds us all accountable

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Forgiveness is a controversial subject. Some say you shouldn't forgive too quickly, that it takes time to fully process the injustice you just suffered. Others look at the persecutor and worry about letting him off the hook. Shouldn't justice be served? Shouldn't everyone be held accountable for their actions?

This attitude presumes that unless we hold others accountable they won't be. It ignores any sense of cosmic justice, known to many as "karma." Even those who profess to believe in the concept of karma can get triggered towards vengeance when some particularly heinous crime is committed. It seems so passively inappropriate, to just stand by while innocents suffer.

I wrote about how we handled the terrorist attack in my book, Forgivin the Unforgivable.

Not Blinded By The Light

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Shafts-Of-Sunlight-3585940A teacher of mine once told me, "If you really want to help someone on their spiritual journey, shine your light on their path, not in their eyes."

"Brilliance" can make someone stand out or help those around them find their way. One is an ego trip, the other is about service.

Anyone who has encountered a genuine "beamer" knows that just being with them can be transformational. It's not what they say, even what they do that inspires so much as who they are. Who they are permeates everything they think, say and do; it creates a field of radiant influence around them. It's tangible, and it's empowering.

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

The Truth Just AheadPolitics may historically be the official domain of deceit and organized religion a circus of escalating irrationality but surely lying reaches fine arts status in education.

What are we taught? That society is sane, when it is clearly not (note million dollar salaries to athletes while our children starve, etc.). That leaders are public servants, when they are self- serving adolescents. That behaving pays off, that following the rules leads to success, that hard work paves the road to prosperity.

What if we were told the truth? Imagine learning that we are individually responsible for creating our own life experience and that blaming is a psychological disease. Imagine exploding the biggest lie of them all, that happiness comes from the outside. What would life be like if we shed our addictions to seeking, acquiring and possessing? Sure, the minute anyone starts down this road, an uproar arises, accusing the speaker of impracticality. But who said anything about retreating into a cave? In fact, nothing could be more practical than sourcing your own fulfillment. That's freedom. That's independence. That's leadership. And that's honesty.

What does spirituality have to do with reality?

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

woman-sitting-on-rocksjpgHas spirituality ever seemed so irrelevant? With an economy in the toilet, an overheated environment that would be even more devastating if global warming weren't a fraud, and an election campaign that's increasingly a circus of the bizarre, what place could something like meditation have in solving anything?

Well, it's instant. Close your eyes and it all goes away. Does that sound like the ostrich, sticking his head in the sand to ignore reality? Interestingly, ostriches don't actually do that; it's a myth. In fact, the only animal that does that is us! We're expert at ignoring reality, deluding ourselves with lottery dreams and irrational loyalties to habits that have only produced results we don't like but maybe suddenly, magically, will produce the opposite... we hope.

Spirituality? Meditation? Who has the time? Yet... Close your eyes, breathe deeply, focus a positive thought like, "All is well," and that overwhelming mess vanishes.

We live, we grow, we change

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

Forgiveness. It's one of the toughest things to do. I wonder how many of us DON'T have someone in our lives that we haven't been able to forgive? Of course, at the core of it all is the problem we have forgiving ourselves.

Who can't remember things they've done that they regretted? Sometimes it was a mistake, an accident, something beyond our control that just happened. It hurt others and we felt sorry. We wished we could just rewind the tape and change it. Too bad, that only happens in science fiction.

Or does it?
