The Buddha is You, Listening to Me

Written by Master Charles Cannon

Weekly-Contemplation-6-9-2013

“The Buddha is you, listening to me, right now before my eyes.”
~Rinzai—Zen Tradition

The Buddha is a symbol that represents the source of all and everything.  Call it consciousness… call it life… it is the substratum… the ground of being… the very nature of what is and what is not.  All and everything is the embodiment of one consciousness… one life.  It is you… it is me… it is all.

What is That Ultimate Wealth Which Can Never Be Lost?

Written by Master Charles Cannon

"Amass that wealth which has nothing to fear from kings or thieves, and which does not desert thee in death."
   ~The Mahabharata

This quotation from the Mahabharata invites us to question our experience of life.  What is that ultimate wealth which can never be lost?  Simply stated... it is the truth of all life.  It is the truth that there is only one.  If there is only one... then there is no other... who could take it from you.  All and everything shares the same consciousness and it is eternal.  It does not come and go and cannot be taken away.  It is the eternal ground of being... the substratum... the essence of all and everything.

The Greatest Tranquility is When We Desire Nothing

Written by Master Charles Cannon

It has been said that desire is delusion.  It is delusion because it is based in illusion… the illusion of separation.  We as a subject… desire some object that is separate and different from us… in order to make us happy.  Desire is thus both illusion and delusion because in truth there is nothing separate and different from us that we could acquire that would make us happy.

In truth… there is only one.  Both relative polarities are the same consciousness and consciousness is happy by nature.  In other words… we as consciousness are innately happy.  We cannot separate happiness and consciousness except through fantasy.  We can pretend that we are not consciousness… that all and everything is not the same consciousness… and that we are not innately happy… but it is not true.  In truth… there is only one consciousness… a unity in diversity… and it is innately happy.  Therefore… how can you desire what you already are and already have?

The Heart Becomes the Meditation Room

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“The heart becomes the meditation room.”
                                             Zen Saying

The meditation room is a sacred place. Therein we experience meditative balance and proportional wholeness and fulfillment.  As beginning meditators we associate our meditative experience with our meditation room.

Say Nothing and Saw Wood

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“Say nothing and saw wood.”
                                 Vermont Zen

Saying nothing implies silence… silence of the mind.  To say nothing outwardly or inwardly… it to be dominantly silent.  Since all experience is relative… silence in relation to noise creates balance… and balance delivers holistic experience.  Thus in saying nothing… we create balance and the holistic experience of true reality.

Concepts and Judgments Go Together

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“Concepts and judgments go together.  They are unable to express the highest truth.”
~ Zen Saying

Concepts and judgments are the noise of the mind.  They are comprised of thoughts and beliefs and thoughts and beliefs are always noisy.  They are the objective polarity of our mental dimension.  If we are radically imbalanced to the objective polarity… we forfeit the true reality of holistic experience.   Thus it is said that concepts and judgments go together and are unable to express the highest truth.

Each Moment is a Place You've Never Been

Written by Master Charles Cannon

Contemplation-6-3-2013-small

"Each moment is a place you've never been."
   ~Mark Strand

Consciousness creates itself newly in each nano-second of its happening.  If we are truthfully aware... we have never been here before and we will never be here again... as we are here and now.  To be wakeful within the nano-second happening of life is to experience true reality.  It is in this understanding that all wisdom traditions ask the fundamental question... who are you now?

A related question is... how awake are you?  Are you fully present in the here and now happening of life?  If not, you are asleep within a virtual reality... a dream.  You are mired in the illusions of the past and the future.  And most importantly... you are not fully alive.

You are The Truth

“You must get rid of the belief that you are yet to realize the truth.  You are the truth… here and now.”
 Ramana Maharishi

We are enculturated and conditioned to believe that we are incomplete as we are… that we must acquire something to make us whole.  This leads us to the experience of content identification.  We define ourselves based on the content of our lives.  We are thus defined by our relationships, our careers, our children, our families, our communities, our nations and our world.  And we are further defined by the content that we acquire and possess… money and all the things that money can buy.  Thus we continually build our content identities.

Master Charles Discusses Maximum Self-awareness

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“How I would like people to hear the sound of snow falling through the deepening night.”
                                             Hakuin—Zen Tradition

The sound of snow falling is almost imperceptible.  It is a most subtle and relatively silent sound.  To hear it… to experience it… one must be acutely wakeful.  Such experience requires maximum self-awareness.

Human beings should look for what is and not what they think should be.

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“Human beings should look for what is and not what they think should be.”
                                             Albert Einstein

What is ... is the essence of life.  What we think it should be are our stories about it.  The essence of life is consciousness.  It is but a joyous energy eternally delighting in itself.  Life ... in and of itself ... is but a blissful consciousness.

See into life. Don’t just look at it.

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“See into life.  Don’t just look at it.”
                                       Anne Baxter

Merely looking at life is like treading water at the surface and being unaware of the depths below.  The surface of the ocean is objective life and if we are dominantly objective we are imbalanced and fragmented in our experience of life.  Imbalanced and fragmented experience is illusory… which means that our experience of reality is virtual rather than true.  At the surface of the ocean… the waves can illusorily appear as separate and different from each other and we forget that they are but parts of one ocean.
