The Further Shore

Written by Master Charles Cannon

Few among men are they who cross over to the further shore.  The others merely run up and down the bank on this side.
~The Dhammapada

In this timeless quotation from the Dhammapada, the further shore  represents what is trans-egocentric and beyond the mind.  The few who cross over to the further shore experience the true reality of who they are and what life is beyond their minds and without their stories.  They experience the state of witness consciousness in the here and now of its happening.  They experience joyous life—the fullness of life.

Gain is delusion. Loss is enlightenment.

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“Gain is delusion; loss is enlightenment”
--Zen Tradition

What does this quote mean?

Gain is doing.  It’s the ego-driven mind.  Here, gain means to compete, to acquire, to gather content with which you identify and to construct a content identity that is not real.  All the problems of humanity arise from this egoic conflict, which is the illusion of separation

What our very breath can teach us

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“What we call ‘I’ is just a swinging door, which moves when we inhale and exhale.”
 --from the Zen tradition

This quote describes relative reality:  inhale, interior; exhale, exterior.  Have you noticed that you are constantly breathing, that this inhalation/exhalation process is constantly happening? Your very breath validates that your reality is relative.

Be Wakeful of Your Presence

Written by Master Charles Cannon

I invite you to be wakeful of your presence, to be conscious of your existence in this very moment of its happening.  In case you haven’t noticed it, in all the years of your life, you only ever exist here and now in the present moment.  Therefore, the present is the gateway to presence.  Can you be present here and now in this nano-second by nano-second happening of life that is your existence?  Can you aware of your existence?  Can you be awake and fully alive?

Can you just be in this very moment?   If you are conscious of your existence what does it feel like?  How do you feel existing here and now?  Existence … life … is an energy, a life force.  The holistic energy of relative reality vibrates.  Your existence, your life in this moment, in and through your physical body is but a vibrating energy.  Can you feel your existence as vibrating energy right here and right now?  Can you be wakeful enough, conscious enough, that you are actually aware of your energetic existence?

Make Meditation Simple by Being a Witness

Written by Master Charles Cannon

Meditation is simple and requires no effort. We can define it as, "watching the experience that we are having." The simplicity and ease of meditation is the greatest challenge we have when we sit to meditate, yet in truth we are always meditating, watching ourselves in the experience that we are having. So why must we make the distinction and consciously choose to meditate?

From birth to the present, life is a process of accumulating the content of our experience, and we get very complex. We create an illusory content-based identity and use it to define ourselves. Soon we define everything and opinions, comparisons and judgments abound. When we sit to meditate and be still and experience a more subtle part of ourselves all this noise gets in the way.

What’s Happening?

Written by Master Charles Cannon

To answer this question, ask yourself where is your attention in this moment?  Wherever you direct your attention determines the experience that you have.

One must remember that the human brain-mind is very primitive.  We have many more animal characteristics than we would like to acknowledge and this is evidenced in the functioning of our brain-mind in terms of attention.

Meditation and the Silent Mind

Written by Master Charles Cannon

When the mind is silent, beyond weakness or non-concentration, then it can enter into a dimension which is far beyond the mind, the true reality. ~ Upanishads

This quote from the Upanishads dates back several thousand years. The Upanishads are part of the Veda, the oldest holistic model of reality.  This quotation is interesting because it speaks of the mind as a gateway, which is “silent beyond weakness or non-concentration.”  Some people are ignorant of meditation.  They think that it is a type of relaxing experience, similar to sleep and that anyone can experience it and master it.

A Holistic Way of Life

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“The Buddha did not teach Buddhism.  He taught a holistic way of life.”  ~S.N. Goinka, a Buddhist scholar

The Buddha did not teach Buddhism. He taught a holistic way of life. You could apply this to any great master. Christ did not teach Christianity; he taught a holistic way of life. Krishna did not teach Hinduism; he taught a holistic way of life. So it begs the question, what is your way of life? What way of life do you follow?

How Consciousness Updates Itself

Written by Master Charles Cannon

Individuated consciousness, which is you and me, is always evolving.  We are here to grow through this human experience. From an evolutionary perspective we are in each nano-second more than we have ever been.  You, me, all and everything is constantly updating itself through our interaction with universal consciousness.

Universal consciousness, as all-possibility, interacts with our individuated consciousness, which is limited possibility, because we can only experience to the extent we have evolved.  Based on our evolution to date—our soulular history of experience that delivers us to this moment,—we are interactive with the all-possibility of universal consciousness, and we download from universal consciousness the possibility that is self-referential to us in this moment.

The American Dream

Written by Master Charles Cannon

statue of liberty new york city-normal

I’ve written a new book, soon to be published.  It’s entitled Awakening from the American Dream … From Crisis to Consciousness. There are many aspects of the American Dream that we could address, but the foremost among them is the pursuit of happiness.  You believe that you are here to pursue happiness and you pursue happiness through the material world.  The more materiality you acquire the happier you are supposed to be.  The more content you have in your life, the more stuff you get, the more you build your identity, and the primary stuff of life within the material myth is money.

Confusion is the result of imbalance in relative consciousness

Written by Master Charles Cannon

People are often confused.  Confusion is a natural state of being on this planet within human experience and confusion is the result of imbalance.  Furthermore, imbalance is the result of not truthfully understanding the nature of life.

We live in a relative reality.  There are always two polarities to our experience.  There’s always the inside in relation to the outside.  We can get imbalanced to the outside--mesmerized by the objective world around us, but it has no existence, no meaning except in relation to the inside.  The two polarities are always simultaneous.
