Gratitude, The Real Spice of Life

Written by Master Charles Cannon, Will Wilkinson

It’s easy to forget to be grateful for our many blessings. That’s what a busy schedule and 24/7 doomsday news programs can do! But, as Kimberley Cohen, the founder of The Insight Technique, reminds us in a recent blog, “Being thankful should be treated as an important part of the day because appreciation contributes to our genuine happiness.”

She goes on to list six important points about gratitude. First, it’s important to make a conscious effort, to be deliberate. Instead of being reactive, be proactive. Initiate the expression of gratitude, arbitrarily.

She suggests writing down what we are grateful for. Great idea, since this makes them more real. Next, she champions the importance of remaining hopeful, no matter what. Some days are tough. But, instead of losing sight of our blessings and plunging into depression, we can simply acknowledge how we feel. Regardless, we can simultaneously express gratitude.

This flows into her next point, which is to acknowledge our challenges. There are various ways to do this. We can just casually notice them, while complaining and wishing they could go away. But what she is surely talking about is acknowledging the value of our challenges. There’s a reason they are showing up, there are lessons to learn, muscles to stretch and strengthen.

Her final pointers are to treasure all our moments and to never forget when we are feeling good. I would add a seventh, to remember that this is normal! We are evolving. Sometimes it feels good, sometimes it doesn’t. But this is what being alive is all about, to expand awareness and become more and more of who we already eternally are in spirit.
