Awareness is the measure of evolution in individuated consciousness. We are here to evolve, to grow through the experience of being human and, through this, the measurement of our growth is our self-awareness.
The real question then is: how aware are you?
How wakeful are you of your existence here and now? Are you fully aware of the life that empowers you moment by moment? Or are you over-powered by your mind? Does your mind distract you from the moment of your existence in the here and now and obscure your awareness of being?
It was the Buddha who said, “The greatest miracle is to Be.” It sounds so simple -- to be -- and yet it can be so challenging to fully be in the here and now, the eternal now of life, of consciousness. However, the brilliance of consciousness is that it can turn its awareness back upon itself and be self-aware of its Being in any moment.
The simplest method of wakefulness is to be aware you are breathing. In case, you haven’t noticed, you breathe 21,800 times in 24 hours, plenty of opportunity to be aware. Breath is life, life is breath, breath is consciousness. It is the breath of life that empowers us, gives us existence.
Consider this, have you ever noticed that your breathing only ever happens in the here and now of your existence? It is not possible to be aware of your breath yesterday or 5 minutes ago or 2 hours from now or tomorrow or next year. That would be fantasy breath because, if you notice, breath only ever happens here and now.
Simply open your awareness and focus upon it in this moment, and be aware that you are breathing. Then observe the experience that you have when you maintain the awareness of your breath in duration. Breath is the gateway to the now of consciousness happening, to the now of the consciousness of life that you are, that all is. Awareness of breath in duration therefore will radically evolve your wholeness.
