itnessing the determined and often inventive solutions that earnest activists come up with to address our global predicament recalls a statement from my latest book: “Egoic consciousness is determined to fix things, make the world a better place without changing consciousness.” Einstein spoke to this, warning that problems created by one level of consciousness can’t be solved at that same level. Millions have heard his caution (and even quoted it) but how many have assumed that the change Einstein spoke of had already happened for them, that it was some sort of generic shift that, once made, obviated the need for any further transformation?
A following statement from the book: “Awakening, we understand the primary need for connection with Source, to let our actions be coordinated from a level beyond our well-intentioned ego minds.” Assuming this connection with Source is made, through a change in consciousness, what then?
Presumably, “our well-intentioned ego minds” would give up the throne!
Do they? How would we know? For one thing, we would live in questions, rather than answers. Convictions imposed on problems as the precursor to solutions is a hallmark of egoic strategies. “Hell is paved with good intentions.” Uncertainty, on the other hand, indicates a willingness, at least, to discover something new. Is that enough? No, but it’s a good start.
I wrote about this as finding your inner Socrates. Socrates, as you may recall, was proud to declare that he knew nothing. He knew nothing but discovered – through vigorous inquiry – the wisdom relevant to the moment, whether his task was debating, conveying truths in a lecture or writing or, I assume, simply being himself in silence.
eginning with an open mind, some sort of induction can occur via connection with Source Intelligence. How does one make that connection? It’s less esoteric than many imagine. Breathe! Be! That connection is already here! What did you imagine was beating your heart? Ignoring Source didn’t obliterate it, except in our conscious experience.
Some sort of dawning awareness occurs, an expansion of awareness, a different perspective… you know the experience. It may be happening right now. In fact, if it isn’t, why not? This moment is as good as any to do as Einstein advised. In fact, it’s the same moment! They all are, in the timeless reality of Source connection.
Induction leads to integration. What dawns, rises… awareness consolidates, integration occurs. What was glimpsed as a fragment of new understanding begins to fill out, flooding consciousness less as a phenomenon than as a new way of being. Now a “new normal” begins to establish itself, a new base line. And, from there?
Transmission. The abundance of Source can’t be hoarded. That’s the profound difference between spiritual and material wealth – one can be kept for personal use alone, the other must be shared freely. So, as this change in consciousness occurs through connection with Source, the induction of new awareness begins to integrate and then flow beyond oneself as a transmission.
Why? To fulfill the mission of consciousness: to know itself ever more fully. That can only happen through expression. Contemplation may indeed begin the process but the proof is always in the “fruits.” And, there are many varieties. Source is not restricted to the speaking of words about spiritual things! Indeed, this is the new consciousness that can create a new world.
I’ve quoted activist Grace Lee Boggs who wrote: "We need to grow our souls. We need to find that balance of life that respects each other, that thinks that the most important thing at this time on the clock of the world is not our accumulation of things, is not economic growth which threatens and imperils all life on this planet including ourselves, that the time has come to grow our souls, to grow our relationships with one another, to create families that are loving and communities that are loving, to bring the neighbor back into the hood.”
“Growing our souls,” that’s another way to describe this ongoing change in consciousness, the constant renewal through induction, integration, and transmission that brings the wisdom and nourishing power of Source energy into this material world through you and me… our purpose, by the way!
wakening, we understand the primary need for connection with Source, to let our actions be coordinated from a level beyond our well-intentioned ego minds.” What’s primary for you? For increasing numbers of us it’s precisely this, in whatever way it develops as we are preparing food, reading a bed time story to our daughter, driving to work, reading a book, etc. Something else is going on, because of our connection with Source. Consciousness is expanding. Our actions (including our thinking and speaking) are being coordinated. And, miraculously, that personal coordination simultaneously produces coordination with every other life form similarly connected, including every human being – even those so very different from us.
That is the power of being and it is the only strategy that leads to knowing what to do: a new level of consciousness that creates new solutions.
