Apparently, US researchers have just made giant strides towards achieving usable nuclear fusion. The aim is to create an unlimited source of energy.
Wow, amazing! Who could have ever imagined it would be possible to have an unlimited source of energy? It’s not like there’s anything remotely like that anywhere in sight. But wait, there is, and it’s called the sun!
Fusion is how the sun works and it’s already putting out enough energy to fuel the entire planet and it’s free. The problem is, the sun does this the way it wants to, not the way we want it to. If we were to just use the sun’s power, we’d have to change our lifestyle, we’d have to… change.
Heaven forbid. Instead of learning how to use the sun, let’s make our own source of energy in the lab. Then we can do whatever we want, like we do now. Except for needing to spend time on all the side effects of everything we’ve created to let us do whatever we want. Not that this amounts to much. Well, actually it does, like dealing with killer storms that cause billions of dollars of damage (partly caused by human activities), mass hunger caused by over population and drought, economic hardship experienced by millions caused by greed and deceit, etc.
But, other than all that and a hundred other problems, we’re good as gold, being pretty independent from that old ball of fire in the sky right now and with research like this suggesting there’s a lot more where this came from.
So, bravo to the researchers and let’s look forward to the day when all the power we want is available to do whatever we want any time we want. If history can teach us anything about what human beings do without any sort of constraints, I’m sure it will turn out just great.
