A Mormon bishop recently shocked members of his congregation in Salt Lake City when he showed up in church looking like a dirty homeless man then proceeded up to the lectern and revealed himself.
He said that his goal was to remind everyone to be kind to everyone, particularly during this season. Now, there’s a great Christmas message that gets lost in both the overwhelming tide of commercialism and also the rhetoric of organized religion’s fundamentalist viewpoints.
“Love your enemies,” Christ said. Who agrees? History is littered with wars connected to religion. “God” supposedly supports his followers to fight against those who pose a threat to their particular brand.
Who do homeless people threaten? They remind us that all is not perfect with this culture, that there are many doing without the comforts we may take for granted, and that compassion doesn’t need to be earned.
Let’s all be inspired by this spiritual leader.
