Learning How To Love - Part 4

The best thing about Love is that it is unlimited. We will never solve the mystery; that would only ruin Love.

If we lived a thousand years we could not fully experience all that Love means. And here is the promise of a happy life: to explore without needing to reach any destination, being fulfilled in the journey itself.

There’s an old saying: “If you don’t change direction, you will end up where you are headed.” So, where are we headed, as a species and as individuals? And, if we don’t like the looks of what’s looming on the horizon, how do we change course?

Of course, there’s another question before these, which is: are we even willing to look? Ostriches are maligned for sticking their heads in the sand (they don’t do that; it’s just a myth); we humans excel in the “avoiding the obvious” department. One tangible example is climate change. Some facts: It’s hotter. Ice is melting. There are more big storms. These are just facts. Whether humans caused this or it’s a natural cycle is less important than taking action. If climate change threatens our wellbeing or even our very survival as some say and we can do something about it, why wouldn’t we just do that rather than debate who or what’s to blame?

Jean Liedloff offers some encouraging words in The Continuum Concept: “I believe it is possible to start as we are, lost and handicapped, and still find a way back. At least we might learn the direction in which our best interests lie and not go on making efforts that have an equal chance of leading us further off track.” 1

“Love is not about mastering relationships! Love is letting go of separation, accepting the invitation to be present in full self-worth because self has become Self, an experience of oneness with all.”

Our best interests relate to learning to love, which happens simultaneously with learning to live. Love is not about mastering relationships! Love is letting go of separation, accepting the invitation to be present in full self-worth because self has become Self, an experience of oneness with all. This “all” is not theoretical. Laura Sewall writes evocatively about exactly what it is we connect with when Love takes us over, when we look through the eyes of Love, and begin to perceive the very real “awake world,” as opposed to the conceptual shadow land of delusion we’ve slumbered in:

“My prayer is that we learn to see, hear, taste, touch, and feel with great desire and care. It is my hope that a return to our senses, a renewed depth of experience, will inspire us to bring our perceptual powers to the co-creation of a vibrant world. I pray for a revolution by force, by the great forces of the universe entering and shifting us, passing between and into our cells, fingering our sinew and shaping our souls. I pray that the untamed world reaches deeply into us—whispering, storming, and breaking open our tender, crusty hearts.” 2

It’s never too late for our “tender, crusty hearts” to break open. We know the feeling; it’s happened before, and it can happen again. In fact, this very moment can be a beginning, a moment of conscious choosing. “Yes, I want to learn to love.”

“We were conceived in Love, born in Love, we live and, finally, die in Love.”

A new world will open. There’s no deserving this, no effort required to earn the kind of Love we are discussing. We were conceived in Love, born in Love, we live and, finally, die in Love.

“Then, turning toward the mystery, I let go into the floating world, and follow my heart into the luminous unknown, the body light as a feather, a sense of ease pervading as I feel myself born into the vastness of original being, knowing that love is the only rational act of a lifetime.” 3

You are rich; we all are. We are rich in Love and there’s never a better time to open and receive than right now. Breathe it in, feel the power and radiance of this Love, which also steers the stars, permeating your being from the inside out, from the core of who you eternally are.

And, in this safe embrace, contemplate the end, that moment when you release your human body with its mind and heart and return to Love, to your origins in Love. It might go something like this:

“Then, turning toward the mystery, I let go into the floating world, and follow my heart into the luminous unknown, the body light as a feather, a sense of ease pervading as I feel myself born into the vastness of original being, knowing that love is the only rational act of a lifetime.” 3
