Most of us deal with government incompetence by staring in disbelief at news reports. Not so for one billionaire hedge fund manager who has just donated $10 million to finance pre-school programs slated for suspension because of the government shutdown. This benefits about 7,000 children in six states.
This is what happens when those empowered to lead us fail - citizens step forward to take up the slack. Maybe this is what needs to happen all the time.
Imagine a wave of local heroes, all doing what seems necessary in the situation. No politics, no self-serving agendas, no blackmail from corporate sponsors. Just right action for right actions sake.
Perhaps this man’s example is a lesson for our times that points all of us in the same direction – to fill in the holes created by selfish leaders and impotent policies.
Of course, the real question is who’s going to do it? Not “who” as in which people but “who” as in which individual, someone authentic with only contribution in mind, or an ego driven manipulator bound to destroy, even with the best of intentions.
Money, or energy of any kind (starting with our attention) well spent is always that which is invested in expanding the experience of love. That’s what this generous businessman did. What we might do depends on who we are.
