Your robotic control center -- your ego -- doesn’t like to relinquish its control to holistic awareness. So, what does it do? It distracts you. It makes you fidget. It makes you twitch in one way or another. But if you can rise above your robotic-ness through the principle of balance, your ego will begin to yield to truthful experience.
To accomplish this, start by considering the contrast between forms (such as the seven billion human beings on this planet) and formlessness. It may seem to us that form is dominant. We can say that we are forms of consciousness. We can say that we and everyone and everything that we perceive as objects are forms of consciousness in this moment.
Yet, simultaneous to these forms is the formless, the spaces around and between the forms. Observe that constantly surrounding us is formless spacious consciousness. If you maintain your focused awareness, what do you observe? The spaciousness is greater than the forms. In this moment, there is much more surrounding space than there are forms. So, in any moment if you are truthfully aware, you are aware that spaciousness dominates form.
The subjective naturally dominates the objective, so keep your focus on the spaciousness of this moment, the spaciousness in relation to you as a form. Really, you are like a word in this article. The spaciousness that surrounds you is the spaces between the words, between the forms and surrounding the forms. It’s the open space on this page, between the letters of the words of the sentences and so on.
If you allow your holistic awareness to more radically expand, you begin to notice the change in your perception. But watch the distractions. The ego always tries to impose its robotic control. Practice being still and allowing the spaciousness of the moment to be as dominant as it is. You can see, in the dominant scheme of things, that you -- as a form of consciousness -- are not really very important. There is something much greater than you always happening, and that’s the spaciousness of consciousness that surrounds you — the spaciousness that is vast unto infinity.
