Surroundings are created by the activities of the mind

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“Just as a picture is drawn by an artist… surroundings are created by the activities of the mind.”

An artist begins with a blank canvas. Then he or she paints the painting… their version of reality… upon it. The painting then is but an interpretation of reality. It is but a projection of that artist’s data upon the canvas.

We likewise create our experience of life in the same way. Life or reality… in essence is but a blank canvas… upon which we project our data… our interpretations of who we are and what it is. Our experience then is simply that… our interpretation and projection. It is our limited version of reality.

What is our experience if we suspend our interpretations? If we are wakeful and the mind is stilled… what then is our experience of reality? In the same way that a still pond clearly reveals its bottom… so also does a clear mind reveal its essence. To fully experience true reality… our mental distortions must be relinquished.

This week… let us endeavor to more wakefully explore and experience true reality beyond the distortions of our minds. Letting the mind settle is the construct of the meditative art and science. The application is simple… meditate… meditate… meditate.
