The Ultimate Mastery of Human Experience

Written by Master Charles Cannon

“Heaven means to be one with God.”

Everyone agrees that Confucius was a man of great wisdom.  This quotation is an example of his enlightening awareness.  For the people of his day, heaven was understood to be the place where one could be with God for all eternity.  It was not understood to be the experience of oneness with God.  In one little sentence, Confucius evolves the experience from dualism to holism.  This is the mark of the masters.  They delight in wholeness beyond all fragmentation.  They are anchored in holistic experience.

Confucius’ quotation is imbued with his holistic awareness.  It is not a mere intellectual definition.  It is rather an experience.  Unified Consciousness is the ultimate mastery of human experience and it is unified Consciousness that is expressed in this quotation.  Confucius obviously enjoyed enlightening wholeness, yet for many people of his day his expressions remained conceptual.  In other words, you have to be it and just thinking it is not the same experience.

The same principle is true today.  The Holistic Model of Reality has been validated, yet how many people actualize it as their experience?  Intellectual enlightenment is not the same as enlightening experience.  It all boils down to experience versus concept.  The question remains, am I experiencing holistic reality or am I merely thinking about it?  Though I may intellectually understand it, is it my existential experience?

Consider the Taoist symbol….. often referred to as the Yin/Yang symbol.  It is the perfect symbolic representation of holistic reality.  The two halves of the circle are perfectly balanced and equal.  This denotes unified consciousness within relative reality.  Subject and object, being and becoming, unity and diversity, are balanced and unified as the same source consciousness.  The circle containing the balanced relative polarities denotes oneness or wholeness.  Further, within each polarity is a small circle denoting the opposite polarity.  This expresses the continuity of one consciousness as the relative polarities which can never really be separated.  You cannot have one without the other.  Subject without object is impossible in relative reality.  Consciousness is always in relation to itself.  Such is its oneness.  Thus, the Taoist symbol is a perfect representation of holistic reality.

Yet, intellectually understanding the Taoist symbol is not the holistic experience that it represents.  How can the holistic experience be actualized?  The answer is the Balance Position.  The Balance Position is the experiential actualization of the Taoist Symbol.  How many times have you seen the Taoist symbol?  How many times have you seen it and intellectually understood what it represents?  Most importantly, how many times have you actualized it as your existential holistic experience?  Again, the eternal riddle….. experience versus concept.

The Balance Position should thus be your daily experience.  It should be relentlessly practiced until it becomes natural, spontaneous and constant.  As you continue in your daily practice, refine it as follows.

Interior and exterior could be referred to as the Seer and the Seen.  The Seer is the subjective consciousness and the Seen is the objective consciousness.  The Seen is this computer screen in front of you and the words that you are now reading.  To emphasize the interior, the non-dominant opposite polarity, shift your awareness from the Seen to the Seer.  Begin with the Seen and with your awareness follow the Seer back through your eyes to the interior consciousness that is seeing.  Let your awareness move back behind and beyond your eyes to the interior consciousness that is seeing through your eyes.  While the Seen (the computer screen and the words) are still here, your awareness is focused on the Seer.  As you maintain this interior awareness, the Seer balances with the Seen, and your relative consciousness unifies.

The result is holistic experience since wholeness is always proportional to balance.  Such is the authentic experience of the Balance Position and the Taoist symbol.

Use the Seer and the Seen awareness focus when practicing the Balance Position in any context.  It will easily deliver you to holistic experience.  In this way, you will experientially actualize the Taoist symbol.  Thus you can move from concept to experience in any moment.  The choice is always yours.
