“The universe is made of stories not atoms.”
Once there was a mystic named Sufi Sam. He was famous for his press conferences in which his answer for all questions was the same. He simply said… it’s all concepts. When it comes to who we are and what life is… the same is true. It’s all concepts, definitions and stories. The universe that we experience is really our stories about it.
The primary question then of all mystics is… what remains when the stories end? If we cease to define our experience… what exactly is our experience? It is this primary mystical question that is the basis of the meditative construct. To simply sit and be empty of all stories and definitions… is to experience what is… as it is… however it is. The Gnostics said that life is a mystery and the closest we can get to that mystery in its totality is wakeful nothingness.
This week… let us endeavor to meditate on wakeful nothingness. Let us simply sit and be empty… a witnessing consciousness watching nothing. In this way… relinquishing definitions and stories… we enjoy proximity to the ultimate mystery of life and allow it to be as it is… however it is. Such is indeed a worthy exploration.
