Our experience of life, of existence, is only ever here and now. If we are wakeful, the now is eternal. There is only now, the now of consciousness, blissful consciousness in each nano-second of its happening. So thus the importance of wakefulness!
Wakefulness is the basis of modern spiritual experience. We must cultivate wakefulness, holistic wakefulness. Can we be present in the here and now of life? Can we be holistically aware that there is only one consciousness in the here and now of its happening?
If we are not wakeful, holistically wakeful, we miss the moment. When we miss the moment, we forfeit the experience of true reality, which is blissful existence. We fall asleep while we are awake and enter into a dream, a virtual reality that isn’t real and in the process we limit ourselves greatly and create all kinds of illusory suffering. The evolutionary focus is always increasing wakefulness, increasing self-awareness. How aware are you in each moment of the happening of consciousness? How awake are you?
It’s like the story of the Buddha. Someone once asked him, “Are you god?” He said, “No.” They then said, ”Well, what are you?” He answered,”Awake.” That’s what the word Buddha means in English—awake, awakened one. Are you an awakened one in this moment? If you are, you are experiencing yourself and all and everything as blissful consciousness in the here and now of its happening.
