You never know where a thought, a casual comment, and a tweet might lead. The thought belonged to one New York writer whose comment became a tweet that was sent by another: "I wish Amtrak had residencies for writers.”
Turns out that someone at Amtrak liked the idea and rewarded the tweeter with a free test run. Now the company is handing out writer residencies on trains throughout their network. That’s free rides.
What’s the lesson? Apparently not all big corporations are only in it for the money. Amtrak loses money on this deal, except they don’t. The story is being read by thousands of… get ready for it, potential train riders.
You can’t buy advertising like that.
Imagine if other companies wake up to the potential for growing their businesses by being generous towards their customers. What a subversive concept, capable of undermining the time-honored foundation of profit-driven capitalism – the rule of the bottom line.
Hats off to Amtrak for honoring a different bottom line, empowering individual creativity. Here’s hoping this is contagious.
