A spiritual awakening is an experience that grabs your attention and lifts you out of everyday ups and downs (often described as awe inspiring).
It can, and often does, arrive unexpectedly.
One minute you may be stressed about concerns like paying your bills, being productive in your job or successfully navigating social media.
Then suddenly, out of the blue, you notice a rainbow, or receive an email from an old friend, or a pat on the back from your significant other.
Moments like that are special because they remind you of what gives meaning to your life.
They could happen any time and be caused by something unexpected, even something seemingly negative.
For example, imagine yourself taking a walk after a stressful day at work.
Your job security is hanging by a thread and you are considering what to do about it.
Invested, as you are, in dealing with your dilemma, you fail to notice the unusual cloud formations in an intense blue sky, the sound of rushing water in a brook that borders your path, or the amazing mountain views on the horizon.
You also don’t notice the big tree root protruding from the path until your foot hits it and you tumble to the ground.

Still seated on the ground, you look around and notice someone walking their dog. They stop and ask if you are OK. The dog comes over, sits beside you and when you scratch its ears, licks your face.
Suddenly you wake up.
You hug the dog and stand up filled with gratitude and awe for your new pal and all of the beautiful scenery.
In fact your feelings are so profound they take up all the space in your brain leaving none for concern about your job.
You have just had a spiritual experience, an awakening, a sense of awe, that allows you to transcend your self and see a bigger picture.
Now you have a choice to make.
You can tell yourself “wow, that was great.” Then move on, once again mired in the challenges of finding a better job.
Or, you can step back, take a deep breath, and relax as you realize that everything is as it should be.
Yes, you still have to deal with your job situation, but now you can do so from an expanded awareness that lets you open to new ways of viewing it.

Not only are spiritual awakening experiences a powerful means of personal change, they can also impact the whole world.
In a study on this topic the researchers describe awe (closely associated with spiritual awakenings) as a “self-transcendent emotion.”
They further state that an awe experience can encourage an individual to be open to new ways of thinking that stimulate their personal development.
Other studies have found the experience of awe associated with what they call “increased moral concern” or “prosociality,” both terms that describe concern for others.

- Start a meditation practice or commit to being consistent with a current one.
Meditation is the most powerful balancing tool there is.
Why?
Because if you are like most people,you mostly experience daily life out there in the world and ignore your rich inner life. Sleep gives you a break, but is often not enough to truly refresh you.
Meditation, which takes you deeper than sleep, helps right the imbalance between your inner and outer experiences.
It also helps balance your other three dimensions by increasing endorphins, reducing stress levels and encouraging the experience of positive emotions and thoughts.
- A focus on your physical dimension is also a good starting place as it helps bring balance to your emotional and mental dimensions as well.
Start by tweaking your daily diet. Ask yourself if what you choose to eat helps you feel great.
To get a better idea, keep a food journal for a week or two that lists the food you eat along with how you feel afterwards.
If, for example, you’re always sleepy after lunch, consider this may be due to something you eat every day.
Try eating less of some of your favorites and see how you feel. Either way, record your response. Then begin to eliminate the worst culprits.
An exercise program appropriate to your constitution is something else to incorporate into your daily routine.
- Emotional imbalances are more subtle.
They can show up in a variety of ways. Anger, jealousy, frustration, irritation, fear, anxiety or guilt are some examples.
When you feel yourself getting angry, fearful, or depressed, zero in on a cause. It may be something unexpected.
For example, excess red meat or hot spices can promote irritation or anger as can too much caffeine.
Or maybe you tell yourself stories about what you should have done or how you should have acted in a particular circumstance, causing you to feel anxious or guilty. In either case you can try smoothing out your emotional state with one of the following:
Try a conscious breath technique.
Breathe in on a count of four, hold for four, then breathe out on a count of four then hold for another four. Sometimes called box breathing, this technique is very balancing.
Or try flowing positive emotions. Think of something that makes you smile. Maybe it's your significant other or your favorite pet or a good joke.
Visualizing something pleasant like a rainbow, a day at the beach, or a burst of spring flowers is another option.
Whatever you choose, imagine flowing it through your heart as you breathe in and out.
Another way to shift your emotions from negative to positive is chanting.
